Breeding facilities

Jesper Scheel

Our animal breeding facilities are situated at DTU Risø campus

DTU are breeding and selling Ossabaw miniature pigs, making them more readily available for European researchers and studying them in DTU projects. The first pigs were born end of 2018/beginning of 2019, and we are producing around 40 pigs a year.

Up until 2018, Ossabaw miniature pigs were bred and sold only in Indiana, USA, initially at Indiana University and later at Corvus Biomedical LLC. From this site, these unique pigs have been shipped for biomedical research to researchers throughout the United States and around the World for more than a decade.

Since 2018, DTU have in close collaboration with Corvus Biomedical LLC also been breeding and selling Ossabaw miniature pigs. The DTU Ossabaw pigs are exclusively bred within this barrier unit closely monitored by veterinary and animal caretaker staff with many years of experience with pig breeding and management.

An extensive databank of baseline values for immunological and inflammatory biomarkers is being built up and a part of the pigs are used for in-house research at DTU, currently focused on innate immunology and brain metabolism in obesity. Other pigs have been sold and are now ‘at work’ at European university and company sites.
